Benefits of Membership
Member Benefits
AESES is a democratic, independent union, and is affiliated with the Confederation of Canadian Unions. As such, we are not subject to the policies of a national or international organization. Our operation provides you with an interest-based method of communication between you and the University’s Administration. We are committed to improving the working lives of our members through collective bargaining, contract administration, education and activities promoting collegiality and participation. AESES members have contributed directly to the development of the extensive benefits packages for our members through bargaining and representation on the Staff Benefits Committees at both the University of Manitoba and The University of Winnipeg.
Rights of Membership
AESES is governed by its constitution which was initially drafted on December 9, 1972 at the First Charter Meeting of AESES. The operation of AESES is funded by a collection of one percent (1.00%) of a member’s salary, which is among the lowest rate of dues in Canada. Your dues provide the necessary funds to retain legal council for grievances and arbitration, and to provide education to members. AESES has created a substantial Defence Fund in order to support economic action and to cover legal costs that may arise in our ongoing efforts to defend the rights of our members. Also, for signed AESES members, with dependent children studying at either UW or UM, your studious progeny may be eligible to apply for one our $1,000 bursaries.
Signing a membership application and becoming a full member affords you extended rights and privileges. These include being permitted to attend certain Association events, such as the annual Members’ Day Lunch, Children’s Christmas Party, Spring and Fall Education Seminars, and the Annual General Meeting. In addition, only signed members are entitled to vote in affairs of the Association and to hold office. However, by law, ratification and strike votes are open to all members, regardless of whether or not they have signed a membership card.
