  • Annual Grandmothers Walk: Selkirk 
  • Save the date for the Selkirk Friendship Centre’s Annual Grandmothers Walk.

September 22, 2025 

Free Lunch and Learn: Virtual 

  • Surviving the Residential School System 
  • This session will consider the reason why we say “Survivor” rather than “graduate,” and how many Survivors of residential schools found solace through the media of sports and the arts. Artist and residential school Survivor Antoine Mountain and author Janice Forsyth will be joined in conversation with moderator Dr. Vanessa Watts.

  • Free Lunch and Learn: Virtual 
  • Uncovering the Truth: Ground Searches 
  • This session will look into the technicalities of what a ground search constitutes and many of the questions around why and how they should be done. The conversation will combine the lived experience of residential school Survivors Francis Dickie Yuzicapi and Jacquie Bouvier with the technical expertise of moderator Bryton Bigelow.

Free Lunch and Learn: Virtual 

  • The Ongoing Legacy of the Residential School System through Child Welfare 
  • This session will look at the direct throughline from the residential school system to the Sixties Scoop through to the overwhelming number of Indigenous children in child welfare today, including the directly related aspect of forced and coerced sterilizations of Indigenous women. CFS worker Roxanne Balan will moderate a discussion between residential school Survivor Vivian Ketchum and reproductive justice support worker Shelby Ponace.

Free Lunch and Learn: Virtual 

  • Reflecting on the TRC’s Calls to Action 10 Years Later 
  • This session will reflect on the decade which has passed since the TRC’s 94 Calls to Action were published, including how many of the Calls have been fulfilled and what is still holding back progress. It will feature TRC Commissioner Dr. Marie Wilson, founding Executive Director of the NCTR Ry Moran, and will be moderated by author Connie Walker.

Free Lunch and Learn: Virtual 

  • Confronting Residential School Denialism 
  • This session will actively confront one of the largest identified barriers to reconciliation: residential school denialism. Dr. Niigaanwewidam Sinclair and Residential School Survivor Eugene Arcand will dismantle the most frequent and inaccurate denialist arguments in a conversation moderated by Dr. Savage Bear.

Orange Shirt Day at the Manitoba Museum: Winnipeg 

  • To honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Manitoba Museum is providing free admission to the Museum Galleries, Science Gallery, and Planetarium from Sunday, September 28 to Tuesday, September 30.  
  • No tickets required. 

 The Colour Orange – An Indigenous Art Gallery in the Forest: Pineridge Hollow 

  • Pineridge Hollow is hosting “The Colour Orange: An Indigenous Art Gallery in the Forest” presented in partnership with the Anish Healing Centre. Experience Indigenous art and galleries set in a serene forest environment. Come together to show support for local Indigenous artists, culture, and community, while honouring the families affected by the residential school system, the Survivors, and those who did not return home. Join them on September 28 from 5 to 8:30 pm.

September 29, 2025 

Remembering Residential Schools – Burning Ceremony: Winnipeg 

  • This September, led by Kookum Karen, Grandmother-in-residence, students, staff, and faculty of the University of Manitoba were invited to reflect and remember by creating small orange origami shirts. 
  • On September 29, from 3 to 4 pm, a Burning Ceremony will take place at the Migizii Agamik Aboriginal Student House, where participants will have the opportunity to offer the paper shirts to the spirit with tobacco, love, and gratitude in a short ceremony. All are welcome to attend.

5th Annual Orange Shirt Day Healing Walk and Pow Wow: Winnipeg 

  • SCO invites you to join us for free events on September 30, 2025, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, in Winnipeg, Treaty One Territory. Wear an orange shirt to honour the Survivors and those who did not make it home. 
  • 10 am: Pipe ceremony at the Oodena Circle at the Forks 
  • 11 am: Healing walk to RBC Convention Centre 
  • 1 pm: Grand entry and pow wow

FortWhyte Alive – National Day For Truth and Reconciliation Experience: Winnipeg 

  • On September 30th, wear orange and visit FortWhyte Alive for a day of special programs to expand your knowledge of Indigenous history and culture. 
  • Admission will be free from 9 am to 5 pm.

Orange Shirt Day: Dauphin 

  • On September 30th, join the West Region Treaty 2 & 4 Health Services in Dauphin, Manitoba for an Orange Shirt Day event taking place from 10 am to 2 pm at 8th Avenue Hall- 304 Whitmore Avenue East. 
  • The day will include cultural teachings, activities for children, music, vendors, and opportunities to learn and reflect. 

Orange Shirt Day: Selkirk 

  • The Selkirk Friendship Centre, in partnership with the City of Selkirk, is hosting an event for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation/Orange Shirt Day on September 30. 

Orange Shirt Day Event: Portage la Prairie 

  • Partake in the Long Plain First Nation Reconciliation/Honour Walk and Pow Wow for Orange Shirt Day on September 30, 2025. 
  • 9 am: Reconciliation/Honour Walk from City Hall to the National Indigenous Residential School Museum of Canada 
  • 10 am: Opening Prayer and Honour Song 
  • 12 pm: Lunch 
  • 1 pm: Performances and Pow Wow demonstration

Remembering Residential Schools – Shirt Making 

  • This September, led by Kookum Karen, Grandmother-in-residence, students, staff and faculty are invited to reflect and remember by creating a small orange origami shirt. 
  • This activity will launch on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, as part of Indigenous Orientation and be ongoing until September 29 at a Burning Ceremony. 
  • You are welcome to stop by Migizii Agamik anytime during this period (Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.), where supplies will be available. 
  • You may: 
    •  Write the name of a loved one or community 
    • Share a message or design that’s meaningful to you 
  • These shirts will be displayed in Migizii Agamik as a collective act of remembrance.

Indigenous – Remembering Residential Schools: Burning Ceremony  

  • September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a time to honour survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and reflect on the history and lasting impact of residential schools. September is also the month when many children were taken from their families to begin the school year in residential institutions. This September, led by Kookum Karen, Grandmother-in-residence, students, staff and faculty were invited to reflect and remember by creating small orange origami shirts. 
  • This initiative concludes on September 29, 2025, from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. with a Burning Ceremony – participants will have the opportunity to offer the paper shirts to the spirit with tobacco, love and gratitude in a short ceremony. The University of Winnipeg Events

Survivors’ Flag Raising 

  • UWinnipeg will be raising the Survivors’ flag in front of Wesley Hall at 10:00 a.m. on September  22. 
  • Designed by Survivors with the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, the Survivors’ flag honours all the lives and communities impacted by residential school. Hosted by Associate Vice-President, Indigenous Engagement, Dr. Chantal Fiola, with remarks by President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Todd Mondor and Dr. Mary Jane McCallum. Special guest Wayne Mason, from the Southern Chiefs Organization, will share information about their upcoming walk and pow wow. 

 Orange Shirt Giveaway 

  • Come to The Hive on September 23 between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., where UWSA, CFS and Indigenous Engagement will be giving away 500 orange shirts to the campus community. This year’s shirt features artwork by Micaela Gilbert, Anishinaabe artist from Sagkeeng First Nation. Everyone is welcome to wear their orange shirts throughout the week 

Volunteer on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 

  • In coordination with the Southern Chiefs Organization, the Office of Indigenous Engagement is assisting with volunteer recruitment for this year’s Orange Shirt Day Walk and Pow Wow on September 30. Various roles and shifts are available. If you’re interested, please fill out the volunteer registration form.

AESES' Charter Meeting was held in December of 1972.

We offer bursaries for AESES dependents at both universities.

Anyone can attend a Board meeting by calling the AESES Business Office prior to the meeting and confirming their attendance.

AESES requires new volunteers for various committees. Please contact the Business Office if you are an AESES member interested in joining one of our committees.
