AESES Activism: May Day & Other Opportunities
Tuesday, May 1st, 2018
Today, May 1st, is International Workers’ Day. Also known globally as May Day, this is a day to celebrate the social achievements of workers. As a union, this in one of our annual highlights, so we want to wish each and every one of you a Happy May Day!
There are a few events and activism opportunities we’d like to make our members aware of:
A rally will be held tonight (May 1, 2018), organized by the Winnipeg Labour Council, to bring attention to the plight of working people around the world. Specifically under the banner of ‘Stop the Cuts,’ we’ll also focus on the austerity measures that Manitoba’s government is taking by making deep cuts in government spending to social programming. We encourage all our members to take part in the march, raising our collective voice! We will be meeting in front of City Hall (510 Main Street) starting at 5:30 pm for a round of speeches and rallying cries, with the march set to begin shortly after at 6:00pm. The route we will be walking with follow Main south until Broadway, then Broadway to Smith, Smith to Portage, Portage to Notre Dame, Notre Dame to Albert ending at Old Market Square for singing of the Internationale.
A second rally is planned for Sunday, May 27th, by the Manitoba Federation of Labour. The ‘Rally for Public Services’ will meet on the front lawn of the Manitoba Legislature (450 Broadway) at 1:00 pm. We’re joining in solidarity and raising our voices to let Manitoba’s government know that unions have a right to fair and free collective bargaining, a right which must be protected, especially in light of an upcoming decision on the injunction and statement of claim against the proposed Bill 28: The Public Services Sustainability Act, which deals with wage freezes.
Finally, a petition has been posted to the CCU (Confederation of Canadian Unions) website, seeking signatures to support the notion of ‘pharmacare for all,’ a universal, comprehensive, publicly-administered and sustainable pharmacare program. Canada remains the only country in the world with a universal health care system that doesn’t include prescription medication. Let’s get as many signatures as we can on this important issue, demanding that the federal government provide all Canadians with access to the prescription medicines they need – https://www.change.org/p/justi

AESES Vote Results: Dues Increase Passed
Wednesday, April 11th, 2018
A membership vote took place at last night’s AESES Annual General Meeting, which dealt with a proposal to raise the AESES membership dues rate from 0.75% to 1.00%. A two thirds majority (i.e. 67%) was required for the motion to pass. 52 ballots were cast, with no spoiled ballots. The results of the vote were 71.2% in favour of the proposed dues increase. The motion was therefore passed and the dues rate will increase.
Thank you to all AESES members who took the time to attend the info meetings we held at each campus earlier this month, those who reviewed the Annual Report and/or the Proposed Dues Increase document via our website, those who were in attendance at last night’s AESES Annual General Meeting, and finally those who cast a ballot as part of the vote for or against the proposed dues increase.

Sign-up Time: Members’ Day Taco Lunch
Monday, March 26th, 2018
The AESES team is busily planning for our annual Members’ Day Lunch celebration – our favourite time of year!
We heartily invite all signed AESES members to enjoy a complimentary meal of tacos at this year’s lunch. Join us on either May 1st (UM Bannatyne – Brodie Atrium), May 8th (UW – Riddell Hall), or May 15th (UM Fort Garry – MPR, University Ctr), depending on where you work. There are two planned sittings, at either 12:00 noon or 1:00 pm, depending on when you take your lunch break.
Pre-registration is absolutely required to gain admittance. So, take a minute to fill out and submit the registration form online, to let us know when and where you will be eating. Or, complete the fillable PDF form and submit it to the AESES office via email (aeses@aeses.ca), fax (204-949-5215) or interdepartmental mail. The deadline to register is April 20, 2018.
If you are not yet a signed AESES member, but would like to enjoy the meal, please fill out an AESES membership application form first and submit it to the AESES office along with your lunch registration form. And, if you are a signed AESES member, see you in the food line!
We will continue with our tradition of collecting donations of non-perishable food items at the lunches, to be passed along to campus food banks. Please consider bringing along some food items as a donation by raiding your pantry or contributing monetarily. All members who provide a donation will be entered in a draw to win prizes and gift baskets, to be distributed at the lunches.
Finally, if you are feeling generous, we depend on a team of volunteers to assist with running the lunches by donating an hour of their time. If you find yourself with time to spare over either 12 or 1 pm sitting at your campus, and would like to volunteer your time, please let us know by sending an email to ghamm@aeses.ca or by noting your availability on the registration form. Volunteer opportunities include assisting with the registration table, serving food or clearing tables.
Let’s eat!
Your Vote Counts: Proposed Dues Increase
Wednesday, March 21st, 2018
We have created a document about the proposed dues increase, which we recommend that our membership take the time to carefully read through and familiarize themselves with. The document contains background information about our current rate, the rate we are seeking, comparisons with other unions, explanations for why the dues increase is being sought, and a question & answer section. The document can be accessed by all members via the secure Members’ Only area of the AESES website.
We will be hosting information meetings at each of our campuses over the next two weeks to provide members with an opportunity to ask questions and seek clarifications about the proposed dues increase. These meetings will also allow our team to further share our reasons for seeking the dues increase, and serve as a supportive place for discussion. The meetings are scheduled for:
Date: Tuesday, March 27
Date: Wednesday, March 28
Date: Tuesday, April 3
Voting for or against the dues increase will then take place via a secret ballot over the course of our Annual General Meeting on April 10th, starting at 7:00pm and running until 8:00pm. Our AGM is set to take place at Temple Shalom (1077 Grant Ave). Signed members are encouraged to show up, place their vote and may leave if they prefer. However, if they also wish to stay for the duration of the AGM meeting, listening to the Executive and Committee Chair reports, they are welcome to do so, but they will need to RSVP their attendance for that portion of the evening by first sending an email to AGMrsvp@aeses.ca from their university email address.
If you are not yet a signed member, but are interested in voting on the proposed due increase issue and/or attending the AGM on April 10th, you’ll also need to fill out a membership form here and submit it to the AESES office in advance of the voting and AGM.
Attendance Encouraged: AESES Annual General Meeting
Monday, March 19th, 2018
All signed AESES union members are invited to attend this year’s AESES Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, April 10, 2018. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm and will be held at Temple Shalom (1077 Grant Ave). Consider joining us! If you plan on attending, an RSVP is required; email us at AGMrsvp@aeses.ca from your university email address.
Executive members and committee chairs will be on hand at the AGM to review financials, speak about the activities of the union, and provide attendees with a question and answer period. We want our members to learn about the value of their union, how our programs can benefit them, how dues are spent, and introduce them to the staff and volunteers who make AESES run so smoothly.
Please note that only signed AESES members are permitted to attend the AGM portion of the evening and vote on issues that arise. If you are not yet a signed member, but are interested in attending, simply fill out a membership form here and submit it to the AESES office in advance of the meeting.
As to reading through our AGM Annual Report prior to the meeting, it can be accessed by all members via the secure Members’ Only area of the AESES website. If you have not yet signed up to access the Members’ Only section, click on the ‘Request an Account’ link in the right-hand column of our homepage. You will then be asked to fill out your full name, work email address and employee number as part of the registration process.
