Impact on AESES-UW Members – UW Cyber Attack
Monday, April 8th, 2024
An email was sent to AESES-UW members on Saturday, April 6, 2024:
To: All AESES-UW Members,
We understand this is a very concerning and unsettling situation for our AESES-UW members.
As The University of Winnipeg informed the community last week of a cyber attack, we just learned on April 4 about the extent of the incident. According to the information provided by the University, this cyber attack occurred in the week before March 24, 2024, which resulted in the unauthorized retrieval and theft of personal and financial data. This data belongs to students and employees (current and former) dating back to 2003. The University is still investigating the full scope of the breach and which groups were affected. In the interim, law enforcement and the Manitoba Ombudsman have been notified. AESES is encouraged by the steps the University has taken in response to the attack and any mitigation required.
We have consulted with our lawyers, Meyers LLP, and are following up with their recommendations. This also includes exploring consulting with cybersecurity professionals for additional guidance.
As a precautionary measure, the University is providing two years of credit monitoring service to those likely affected. Codes and instructions for enrolling will be sent out directly from the University via email and mail. Please visit the FAQ page (uwinnipeg.ca/incident-updates) for up-to-date information or call the dedicated support line (204-786-9325 Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm) if you have immediate concerns.
Although we don’t have any more details than what has already been provided by the University, we are here for our members. If you have concerns or know you have been directly affected by the breach, please call us at 204-949-5200 or email labourteam@aeses.ca.
Take care.

Team AESES, a strong group of seven, took part in the February 24th fundraising walk and thanks to all of the supporters, raised $1,800 for St. Boniface Street Links.
