Passing of Chris McCann, AESES President
Tuesday, July 16th, 2024
It is with heavy heart that we inform you of the passing of Chris McCann, AESES President. Chris passed away unexpectedly early Sunday morning at his residence. Our thoughts are with Chris’ loved ones, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to them. For now, we kindly ask that you respect the privacy of Chris’ family during this difficult time.
Chris had been deeply involved with AESES since 2000, starting on the UM Negotiation Committee and being active over the years on many committees and Board positions. It culminated with him being elected as AESES President in 2022 and in May, re-elected by acclamation for his second term.
Chris was always eager to join the conversation, and his tenacious commitment and passion have led AESES to where we are today. This loss will be deeply felt by all of us who had the privilege of knowing and working with Chris. A longer tribute will be in the August issue of insideAESES.
If you need support during this time, please don’t hesitate to visit https://aeses.ca/wellness or your respective Human Resources department.
AESES is in the early stages of evaluating this loss to our association. In the meantime, our Executive Vice-President, Karen Simpson, will be the interim President. We will keep all members informed of any updates.
AESES and its members have always been a community that comes together in times of need. As we mourn this loss, let us also celebrate the positive and lasting impact Chris had on our organization and each of us.
And just like that, it’s June! It’s also time for the newest issue of insideAESES!

Impact on AESES-UW Members – UW Cyber Attack
Monday, April 8th, 2024
An email was sent to AESES-UW members on Saturday, April 6, 2024:
To: All AESES-UW Members,
We understand this is a very concerning and unsettling situation for our AESES-UW members.
As The University of Winnipeg informed the community last week of a cyber attack, we just learned on April 4 about the extent of the incident. According to the information provided by the University, this cyber attack occurred in the week before March 24, 2024, which resulted in the unauthorized retrieval and theft of personal and financial data. This data belongs to students and employees (current and former) dating back to 2003. The University is still investigating the full scope of the breach and which groups were affected. In the interim, law enforcement and the Manitoba Ombudsman have been notified. AESES is encouraged by the steps the University has taken in response to the attack and any mitigation required.
We have consulted with our lawyers, Meyers LLP, and are following up with their recommendations. This also includes exploring consulting with cybersecurity professionals for additional guidance.
As a precautionary measure, the University is providing two years of credit monitoring service to those likely affected. Codes and instructions for enrolling will be sent out directly from the University via email and mail. Please visit the FAQ page (uwinnipeg.ca/incident-updates) for up-to-date information or call the dedicated support line (204-786-9325 Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm) if you have immediate concerns.
Although we don’t have any more details than what has already been provided by the University, we are here for our members. If you have concerns or know you have been directly affected by the breach, please call us at 204-949-5200 or email labourteam@aeses.ca.
Take care.
